Jim James at The Joy Theatre in New Orleans

Jazzfest in New Orleans is not only about attending the festival. Every night there are dozens of performances around town. Once again Winter Circle Productions celebrated Jazzfest with their “Fest After Dark” concert series. Performances included Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead, JJ Grey, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Gov’t Mule, Shakey Graves, String Cheese Incident, Mike Gordon from Phish, and Kamasi Washington. On the final night of “Fest After Dark” Jim James and his band brought the Uniform Distortion tour to the Joy Theatre.

The My Morning Jacket front man began the set with “Over and Over,” “You Get To Rome,” and “Out Of Time” from the 2018 release Uniform Distortion. James would play six more songs from the album. Surprisingly James only covered one MMJ song. Solo acoustic James performed a haunting "I’m Amazed” as part of the three song encore. The final two songs “Of The Mother Again” and “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)" from the release Regions Of Light and Sound Of God.

Previously James had only performed selections off of Uniform Distortion acoustically. At the end of the night it was obvious that James was as comfortable playing acoustic ballads as power driven loud crunchy rock anthems. James and his band will be on tour now throughout the month of July with shows in the Midwest and West Coast.
