Sessions: Mazie in College Park

Female fronted pop music has transformed since the early 90's, that's for sure. Gone are the “I'm a Slave 4 U” and "gotta rub me the right way, honey" days and instead teenage and young adult females sing along to powerful melancholy anthems. Singers like Halsey, Billie Eilish, and Alessia Cara are overtaking the airwaves with their devil-may-care-I'll-get-over-it attitudes. Music, and pop music specifically, is no longer a man's world, but instead dominated by powerful voices oozing femininity. Enter Mazie, eighteen year old Baltimore native who released her first EP omw in June of this year with MAD Dragon Records.

We caught Mazie performing right outside her hometown at the Milkboy ArtHouse in College Park, Maryland. Though Mazie is a Maryland Native, she is currently enrolled as a freshman at Drexel University in Philly (which has it's own Milkboy Phily right across the Schuylkill River) in the music industry program. The Milkboy Arthouse is a venue/restautant/ bar mash-up that caters to the college students in the area. The urban hangout offers a great place for the locals to grab a bite to eat and catch a show on the bustling streets of College Park. Milkboy boasts itself as a place for emerging pop artists and the only campus-community arts venue of it's kind in the nation.

Mazie's voice is like velvet: it’s strong but serene, edgy but graceful, the perfect soundtrack to the backdrop of College Park. Despite being minutes from the hustle and bustle of our nation's capital, College Park is full of historic buildings, sprawling greenscapes, and colorful industrial store fronts lining the roads. We took a walk around the city with Mazie to check out some of the local areas before her performance that night.
